Comic Book Movie Madness

Comic Book Movie Madness
by William C Walker Jr.

With San Diego Comic Con over and so many comic book movies out now dominating the box office each summer. I thought now would be a perfect time to see which Comic Book Movie reigns supreme.  Long gone are the days where fans would simply dream of their favorite characters brought to life on the big screen.  Despite all the hate comic book films are a billion dollar industry.  Anyone that knows me knows how much I love in no particular order comic books, movies, and sports! So why not combine each of my loves into one epic event.  A March Madness style tournament pitting movies based on comic books against one another to see who comes out on top.  So together with my crack staff(pretty much my younger brothers) we debated on which comic book movies should be in the first ever Comic Book Movie Madness.  Our criteria was simple it had to be a film released in the theaters (so no The Flash, Arrow, or Daredevil) and based on a comic book first (so no Incredibles). There were some comic book movies like The Losers are Swamp Thing that we didn't add this go around but hey next year we could put them in.  Some movies were so close together in quality we simply lumped them together example Fantastic Four & Fantastic Four 2.  Also like the NCAA Tournament there's a field now of 68 with 2 play in match-ups which will kick start the proceedings.

Below is the breakdown with finalized bracket coming after the play in match-ups.

Angry, Sad, and Confused

Angry, Sad and Confused
by. William C. Walker Jr.

April 28, 2015

As Baltimore literally tears itself apart over just the latest murder victim at the hands of the police. I've been completely overwhelmed by emotion. Part of me is so angry, angry that police continue to kill unarmed black men as if it were deer season. Angry that after peaceful protest the message for change is being lost in a sea of looting & violence. Angry that people would destroy their own community in the name of injustice.  But beyond my anger is this overwhelming sadness.  Sadness that the steady stream of violence that's being shown in Baltimore overshadows the whole reason for the unrest.  Which is that people are fed up with seeing their sons, brothers, husbands, and fathers have become an endangered spieces.  So while I understand the reason the people of Baltimore are outraged I don't understand the point of destroying your own community.

I just keep thinking about what Martin Luther King Jr and so many others fought for in the Civil Rights era.  It took true courage & conviction to protest in a non-violent way.  Simply peacefully marching led to many facing the threat of and actual death. So while I see what's taking place in Baltimore it just sends me into a tailspin of feelings like title of this post. Again I get the anger of what happened to Freddy Gray. What I don't get is the benefit of setting businesses & cars on fire?  What I don't get is how looting & assaulting the press or bystanders further the cause for change?  It makes me sad that the neighborhood that will feel the effects of this damage is your neighborhood.  It's our people who're are losing jobs and suffering property damage.  You burning down a CVS isn't hurting the police or those in power, if anything it almost makes them feel justified.  WHICH MAKES MY HEAD HURT EVEN MORE. There's no justification for the death of unarmed men!  I would understand if you were marching through city hall and wrecking every police station on the way.  I wouldn't agree with it nor condone it, it kind of defeats the purpose to me to meet violence with violence. But at least that would make sense to me.

What bothers me even more is the reaction from those that dismiss what those in the Civil Rights era did.  The examples of the peaceful protests after Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Eric Garner and on and on, were cited as examples of how peace is ineffective.  Do we even understand how long those men and women of the Civil Rights fought for change?  It didn't happen overnight and the reality is that the fight is still ongoing. We're barely past 5 decades from the march on Washington, DC.  I keep feeling like those who have been fighting this battle long before the first fire was lit in Baltimore, their voices have been drowned out by a sea of chaos.  Black people are angry that it's been made okay to kill us for no reason, we're sad because we're losing loved ones, and we're confused because no one's being brought to justice. Just in the case of Freddy Gray a man who was arrested by police, walking and healthy when arrested one hour later is in a coma after 80 % of his spine was severed.  Yet do you expect the police to meet swift justice or even interrogation as to what took place? No they actually get 10 DAYS to get their story straight.  Do you even hear about this or is it too important to see about Bruce Jenner's personal life decision?  It makes sense to me why people would be fed up and angry.  No matter how much that makes sense to me I'll never understand the destruction of our own.  I want justice every black man woman and child wants the madness to stop.  It's just a matter of how do we get there?  Will we continue to rally and push for justice learning from those that fought and died for us, or will we give in to our anger and lash out at everything that moves even our own?  We all want change we all want justice, but the more I see in Baltimore the more I just feel angry, sad, and confused.

Bracket Perfecting

Bracket Perfecting
By. William C Walker Jr.

March 27, 2015

Before the 2nd half of the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 resumes tonight. I figured I'd finally get a blog post in regarding this magnificent sporting event.  Second only to the Super Bowl I love March Madness! Even after your bracket is busted after the first two days it's still fun to follow. Yet it was with this year's tournament that I've been hit with an epiphany.  People that know zero about college b-ball are perfect to pick upsets. Ok let me be honest women are perfect! Especially in this single game eliminations.  Which is why to form your perfect bracket the next time March rolls around grab your girl, wife, or significant other and get their picks.

Now the key isn't to just take what they pick as gospel. You simply need to massage in their picks to blend with yours.  The analyst that spend time studying teams shooting % and records feel like we've adequately prepared ourselves to make wise picks. However what we've done is allow the stats to sway our judgment.  You'll say how in the world will a team like 14 seed UAB (that's lost 15 games) compete with a 3 seed Iowa State (that's only lost 9) & comes from the Big 12. There's just no way! This is where your significant other's perspective comes into play.  Now here's the crucial factor it has to be an actual reason for their pick.  I'm not talking "oh that team's colors are prettier".  For example the fore mentioned upset of UAB over Iowa State.  My fiancรฉe's reasoning that UAB would get the victory was simple in her mind.  Country boys from Alabama could ball better than kids that were playing in Iowa.  My reaction to that was that's nonsense! So by shaming her decision with my head shakes & proclamations of craziness she changed her pick. Needless to say after that 1st round (YES I DON'T COUNT THAT 1st 4) tack on another reason for me to apologize.  Out of 32 games she scored 27 right would've at least been 28 if I didn't talk her out of the UAB pick.

Watching her upsets pan out it just hit me.  Her un-informed decisions based on not picking any teams from Texas since it's the home of one of the worst Presidents in US history George W. Bush. Seemed nuts to me yet after the state of Texas went 0-4 she looked like Nostradamus.  So swallow your pride fellas when she says: "I used to date a guy named George that went to Georgetown. He was nice but not very athletic so I'll pick them to win the 1st game but not the 2nd." This is insight that will only come from her. Who knows between your knowledge and her laissez faire attitude steeped in it's own logic, you may find that sweet spot that'll lead you to perfection & bracket immortality!

Oh & who did she pick to win! DUUUUUUUUKE! I love this woman! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

My Top 5: Super Bowl Commercials

My Top 5: Super Bowl Commercials
By William C. Walker Jr.

February 2, 2015

While I'm still not over the Dez catch no catch call in Green Bay, I can't deny that  Super Bowl 49 was an instant classic. So to kick off my week long review to the year's biggest game I've decided to focus on what many of us care about once our team bites the dust. The commercials, to say that this year's commercials were diverse is an understatement. Every year you some that genuinely make you LOL, & definitely get some that make you scratch your head.  So here are my top 5 commercials from Super Bowl Sunday.

5. Esurance is Breaking Bad- Many fans of Amc's Breaking Bad probably wanted to see more of the series main man Walter White played by Bryan Cranston. I don't think anyone expected to see him pop up in an Esurance ad. What makes this ad so funny is how crazy it is to see Walter White pop up from behind a pharmacy counter as if he just woke up. Then as if seeing the character again of course we get that line "Say my name". I'm still chuckling!

4. Fiat & Viagra- That's a combo that doesn't even sound like it goes together, yet the little blue pill was used to hilarious affect in this ad. A lot of Super Bowl ad tend lend a little mystery to what it is exactly that they're advertising. Sometimes it's effective sometimes it'll leave the viewer utterly confused as to what they're selling. This commercial falls in the former category you don't even know what the commercial is about until the end, & maybe it's my juvenile humor but I laughed big time.

3. Taken 4?- Look after seeing Taken 3 I walked away feeling like they should've stopped at 1. But the sequels were entertaining & you gotta love how Liam Neeson has embraced the character. So again with a bit of mystery who was the victim of this Clash of Clans pillaging. None other than Liam who's about to use his set of skills lol. As if that weren't funny enough "LI-AM"!

2. Cure Deflated Balls- Speaking of juvenile humor if you want to guarantee bust a gut laughter. You can't go wrong with a joke that mentions the word balls LOL. Cure taking advantage of all the talk about the Patriots deflating footballs the auto insurance company produced this gem. The hashtags alone sent me into histarics, and while they went with a little innuendo, look up the banned version. Look my fiancรฉe gets on me all the time about my lack of control with laughing over the word balls, but balls are funny!

Heck with it this was too funny not to add!

1. The First Draft- I couldn't but help but flash to the Chappelle's Show sketch in regards to the Race Draft. But this was pretty clever & hilarious. As it appears that Noah is playing the commish with expert analysis from Doug Flutie and Jerry Rice. It's not until the end that you even learn what's being sold but you'll remember it. I was severely tempted to put Cure number 1 but the First Draft pulls ahead.

Honorable mention is the Snickers commercial with Machete and Nucky Thompson! Actors Danny Trejo and Steve Buscimi re-enacting a classic scene from the Brady Bunch. So let me know what you think? Do you agree or disagree? What were your favorites? Stay tuned as I give my top 5 worst Super Bowl ads.

More Than One Play: Cowboys rally from double digits to beat the Lions

My 5 Points: Cowboys vs Lions
by. William C. Walker Jr.

Louis DeLuca/The Dallas Morning News
Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrance Williams (83) catches the winning touchdown pass in front of Detroit Lions strong safety James Ihedigbo (32) in Dallas' 24-20 win during the Detroit Lions vs. the Dallas Cowboys NFL playoff game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Sunday, January 4, 2015.

January 5, 2014

This very first ever My 5 Points playoff edition is going to be different from my previous posts, not just because this was a playoff game.  It's different because there was a controversial call that is overshadowing what in full was a pretty epic playoff game.  Also my 5 points will be more of a highlight of plays that caused the true outcome of the game, not just that one non-call.  Bear with me as my opening paragraph will be a little longer than usual.  Playoff games are tremendous and as much as I felt like the Cowboys were in the playoffs ever since they lost on Thanksgiving.  The reality is that they weren't in the playoffs, now this is playoff football. Win or go home, and it doesn't matter how you do it the point is you have to win.  To win in the playoffs can take up plenty of elements executing when it matters, staying resilient, and some luck.  The Cowboys needed all three to win this game.  To all the Lions fans and Cowboys haters I'll say this about that call.  If it was reverse and this had happened to the Cowboys I would've been mad, but that's not the reason your team lost the game.  So these 5 points are more of showing why as angry as you may have been about that non-call Lions can't use that as an excuse as to why they lost that game.  Trust me I'll go into more dissection of this in a separate post, but I've gone on enough time for My 5 Points(or plays) of why the Cowboys should feel proud of this playoff win.

5. Terrance Williams 76 Yards: Here's the situation down 14-0 showing no signs of being successful against the Lions' defense the Cowboys were in 3 & 12.  After they had just gotten a first down on a 3 & 7 to Witten but it was reversed with a bogus offensive pass interference call on Williams.  But let's forget that did Dallas shrivel in their shell like oh great the refs just screwed us.  No Romo under pressure threw a strike to Terrance Williams that took it 76 yards for a touchdown to put the Cowboys back in the game.  The Cowboys would go into halftime down 17-7 without this score they would've likely been down at least 17-0.

4. 4th & Goal: After the Cowboys blew a golden opportunity coming away with ZERO points after getting a turnover to start the 2nd half.  The Cowboys were down 20-7, let that marinate for a moment.  While everyone will if it wasn't for that call.  The Cowboys offense who hadn't been very successful was down 13.  What they did was go on a 75 yard drive that stalled at the Detroit one yard line.  If Detroit wanted to win maybe you should've stopped DeMarco Murray on 4TH & GOAL! The Cowboys got a touchdown to cut the lead 20-14.

3. 4th & 1: The Lions after having the pass interference call picked up faced 4th & 1.  During the regular season they had 10 4th down conversions.  That was 2nd best in the league, if you felt like you needed to come away with points so badly. Just like Dallas didn't settle for 3 on 4th & goal from the 1, you could've sucked it up & went for it on 4th & 1.  The Refs had nothing to do with that.

2. Dallas Fumbles Away Win:  That could've been the headline after rookie defensive-end Demarcus Lawrence picked up a game sealing fumble, and instead of falling down on it try to run with it. What resulted was Lawrence fumbling the ball right back to Detroit giving them a 1st Down. Lawrence had an opportunity to redeem himself by getting a sack fumble of Matthew Stafford on 4th & 3.

1. 4th & 6 along with 3rd & Goal: Yes it's 2 plays but it happened on the same drive so I'm including it with number one.  Cry all you want scream to the top of your lungs of how the refs stole this game.  But when that pass interference happened the Lions still had the lead at 20-17.  The Cowboys had to score a touchdown to win the game with only 8 minutes left in the game.  On a 3rd & 8 Witten was held guess what NO CALL WAS MADE.  Did the Cowboys disappear no it's the playoffs and you have to do whatever it takes. They went for it on 4th & 6 chances are if they don't get it the games over.  Maybe not officially but chances are extremely slim that the Cowboys will win the game.  I didn't see a non-call from the previous drive result in Romo hitting Jason Witten on a huge 3rd down conversion.  Finally let's talk about 3rd & Goal mind you it was 3rd & goal from the 5 but after a Dallas false start it became 3rd & Goal from the 10.  Those are not easy to pick-up, but Dallas has been terrific on 3rd down all year long leading the league at a 47% conversion rate.  If Detroit wanted to win I don't know how bout you stop Dallas from SCORING!  Tony Romo had a total of 6 seconds to complete his pass to Terrance Williams.  That's too much time to ask a defensive back to cover. So everyone will shout that the non PI call was the reason for the win. But if the Lions changed any of the plays I've listed above it could've been a totally different outcome.  In the playoffs it's win or go home doesn't matter how you get there the key is to get there, and that's what the Cowboys did!
